What is Active Fx, Deep Fx, and Total Fx?

Active Fx and Deep Fx are the two hand pieces that can be used with the Lumenis Ultrapulse laser. The difference between the two hand pieces is primarily in the size and depth of the beams of laser fired.

DeepFX is a revolutionary, fractional laser technology for aged, sun-damaged or scarred skin. The low-downtime procedure uses fractional CO2 laser microbeams to accurately target the deep dermal layers of the skin. This stimulates a cascade of healing responses that leads to tissue regeneration and new collagen formation throughout the entire treatment area. And because only a fraction of the skin is actually touched by the laser, healing time can be limited to just a few days.

The Deep Fx hand piece creates laser beams with a diameter of 0.15mm and these penetrate to a depth of up to 2mm. The density or percentage of area covered by this laser is much less than that of the Active Fx and ranges from 5 to 25%. The Deep Fx handpiece is used for the treatment of deeper problems within the skin such as deep wrinkles, and acne (pitting) scarring. The depth of penetration encourages significant skin tightening which is excellent for the treatment of the skin around the mouth and eyes.

ActiveFX is a fractional laser procedure performed in a single treatment with minimal patient downtime. During the procedure, a high-energy beam of laser light is used to smooth out lines, wrinkles and scars, remove brown spots and other irregularities. It also stimulates formation of new underlying collagen to continue improvement over time.

With fractional laser treatment, only a fraction of the skin’s surface is treated by the laser, leaving small areas of untreated skin. This technique makes the healing process much faster and enables you to get back to normal activities sooner.

The Active Fx hand piece emits beams with a diameter of 1.3mm and a depth of up to 0.2mm. The density, or percentage of area covered by the laser, ranges from 50 to 100%. Therefore, the Active Fx hand piece is employed where there are superficial skin problems, such as fine wrinkles, superficial sun damage, pigmentation, and skin sallowness.

Total Fx

Total Fx is simply the sequential use of the Active and Deep Fx hand pieces on the same areas of skin in one session. By utilising both hand pieces on one area, you can combine the benefits of both levels of treatment and achieve superior results. The recovery period, however, is longer than if an area had been treated with a single handpiece.

Results

The results of ActiveFX or DeepFX laser treatment are long-term and, with proper sun protection, can persist for many years. Most results of treatment are noticeable immediately, whereas others – such as new collagen formation – build up gradually and become more evident over time. Therefore, most people look even better 3-5 months after the procedure.
